• A World In Crisis

"The number of people globally displaced by conflict every single day has nearly quadrupled in that time – from almost 11,000 in 2010 to 42,500 last year." - UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres The global refugee crisis is so great that the UN refugee agency and other agencies are struggling to respond to and meet all the humanitarian needs they face. There were now more than 60 million refugees, asylum-seekers and internally displaced persons in the world. Fifteen new conflicts have broken out or flared up again in the last five years without any of the old ones getting resolved. The world’s 65 million refugees deserve praise for their resilience and courage and those who receive them should be recognized for welcoming them into their communities, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said on Tuesday. In a statement marking World Refugee Day, Grandi said the uncertainties of today’s world could make people want to shut their eyes to the plight of those displaced by war, persecution and violence. However, he added that fear and exclusion would only lead to “barriers, alienation and despair”. This week, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, issued its annual Global Trends report which showed the number of people displaced worldwide had risen to 65.6 million by the end of 2016, its highest level ever. “On June 20, World Refugee Day, we honour the resilience and courage of more than 65 million people who have been forced to flee war, persecution and violence,” Grandi said. “But it’s also a moment to recognise those communities and people around the world who receive refugees and the internally displaced in their midst, offering them a safe place, and welcoming them in their schools, their workplaces and their societies.” Through its work, UNHCR has witnessed the “courage, tenacity and brilliance of refugees,” he added. “Having lost their homes, their work, and sometimes their families, they don’t give up, they find a way to start again.” Inclusion required a “whole of society approach,” he said, linking “students, business leaders, athletes, activists, religious leaders, politicians and artists to share responsibility”. Grandi said there were outstanding examples in villages, towns and cities in countries on every continent where refugees had been welcomed. “In big and small ways, communities around the world are standing together #WithRefugees, recognising that when people work together, everyone wins.” World Refugee Day provides “a moment to ask ourselves what each of us can do to overcome indifference or fear and embrace the idea of inclusion”, he said, concluding: “Because, when we stand together #WithRefugees, we also stand for respect and diversity for all.” http://www.unhcr.org/news/latest/2017/6/5948cf834/refugees-deserve-praise-resilience-courage.html Information for media: If you would like to use this video to communicate refugee stories or require B-Roll, transcripts, stills or much more information, please contact hqvideo@unhcr.org. --- Keep up to date with our latest videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/unhcr?sub_confirmation=1 -- UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, works to protect and assist those fleeing war and persecution. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) invited seven YouTube creators to get to know refugees around the world. See more stories at youtube.com/youtube Learn more about the IRC and YouTube’s partnership at https://www.Rescue.org/YouTube Never before has the world witnessed such a dramatic scale of human suffering. In fact, more people have been forced to flee their homes by conflict and crisis today than at any time since World War II. Last year, the number of people displaced by conflict worldwide surpassed 65 million. In Syria alone, six years of war have driven 13.5 million people from their homes. Millions more have been uprooted in Afghanistan, Nigeria, Yemen and elsewhere. If displaced people could form a country, it would be the 21st largest in the world, with a population greater than Great Britain’s.Only 1% of the world’s refugees are resettled to a third country. More about IRC: The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein, the IRC is at work in over 40 countries and 28 offices across the U.S. helping people to survive and regain control of their future. Zataari in Jordan, the largest Syrian refugee camp in the world with 80,000 people, was supposed to provide temporary housing for people when the government and United Nations opened it in 2012. But since residents have not been able to leave, they have started 3,000 businesses, including pastry shops, a pizza place, a supermarket and a gardening shop, and cities nearby have loosened employment restrictions.

Zygmunt Bauman, one of the most influential thinkers of our time, says many Europeans' fear of refugees boils down to the idea of the “precariat” - people whose lives are marked by precariousness, anxiety and fear. As more EU countries raise walls and the backlash against foreigners grows, Al Jazeera spoke to the Polish sociologist about why people fear refugees. - Full interview here: https://youtu.be/EG63MkQb1r4 - Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check our website: http://www.aljazeera.com/

Those whose lives have been uprooted and torn apart by conflict or natural disaster, UNHCR exists to help them. This is our story. The High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) was established in December 1950. The Second World War left over one million refugees far from home and governments in need of assistance to coordinate the crisis. UNHCR was created to help. The founders thought their task would only take three years but new conflicts broke out and more families were forced flee their homes. In 1951 we started with 34 employees. By the end of 2013 we had over 8,000 people working in 126 countries.
