There were now more than 60 million refugees, asylum-seekers and internally displaced persons in the world. Fifteen new conflicts have broken out or flared up again in the last five years without any of the old ones getting resolved. The world’s 65 million refugees deserve praise for their resilience and courage and those who receive them should be recognized for welcoming them into their communities, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said on Tuesday. In a statement marking World Refugee Day, Grandi said the uncertainties of today’s world could make people want to shut their eyes to the plight of those displaced by war, persecution and violence. However, he added that fear and exclusion would only lead to “barriers, alienation and despair”. This week, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, issued its annual Global Trends report which showed the number of people displaced worldwide had risen to 65.6 million by the end of 2016, its highest level ever. “On June 20, World Refugee Day, we honour the resilience and courage of more than 65 million people who have been forced to flee war, persecution and violence,” Grandi said. “But it’s also a moment to recognise those communities and people around the world who receive refugees and the internally displaced in their midst, offering them a safe place, and welcoming them in their schools, their workplaces and their societies.” Through its work, UNHCR has witnessed the “courage, tenacity and brilliance of refugees,” he added. “Having lost their homes, their work, and sometimes their families, they don’t give up, they find a way to start again.” Inclusion required a “whole of society approach,” he said, linking “students, business leaders, athletes, activists, religious leaders, politicians and artists to share responsibility”. Grandi said there were outstanding examples in villages, towns and cities in countries on every continent where refugees had been welcomed. “In big and small ways, communities around the world are standing together #WithRefugees, recognising that when people work together, everyone wins.” World Refugee Day provides “a moment to ask ourselves what each of us can do to overcome indifference or fear and embrace the idea of inclusion”, he said, concluding: “Because, when we stand together #WithRefugees, we also stand for respect and diversity for all.” http://www.unhcr.org/news/latest/2017/6/5948cf834/refugees-deserve-praise-resilience-courage.html Information for media: If you would like to use this video to communicate refugee stories or require B-Roll, transcripts, stills or much more information, please contact hqvideo@unhcr.org. --- Keep up to date with our latest videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/unhcr?sub_confirmation=1 -- UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, works to protect and assist those fleeing war and persecution. According to UNHCR, we are witnessing the highest level of displacement on record. As a result, there are nearly 22.5 million refugees, over half of them below 18 years. These stateless lives are languishing in different parts of the world in search of a normal life. The refugee crisis demands an immediate and human approach from the world community. The Diplomat interviewed Dr. Honey Oberoi Vahali, Professor of Psychology at Ambedkar University, New Delhi, psychoanalyst and author of “Lives in Exile: Exploring the Inner World of Tibetan Refugees,” on the ways to respond to this crisis. She also threw light on the psychology of a person in exile from the Tibetan and global perspectives. Read more on: https://thediplomat.com

education is a human right that 99% of refugee youth are denied. 450,000 university age Syrian youth have been displaced due to conflict, and cannot afford to complete their education in host countries. They are forced to forfeit their education, take low-paying jobs to support their families and are committed to poverty for life. This is an issue facing 600,000,000 youth impacted by conflict globally. edSeed is a social crowdfunding app that connects compassionate mentors and donors with youth impacted by conflict. Through the app, mentors can guide youth on their education journey and donors can fund their education for as little as 5$. Rama Chakaki is the co-founder of VIP.fund. Her passion is to promote a collaborative approach, invest in social enterprises, use technology for social development and nurture a generation of social entrepreneurs among youth and women in the Arab world. As co-founder and CEO of Dubai-based Baraka Ventures, Rama facilitated women and youth leadership, entrepreneurship and civic engagement workshops, advised regional government and large enterprise on social investments in youth and women lead social enterprise, and incubated sustainable social ventures and Web Technologies. In addition to a grass-roots community engagement approach, Rama worked with GCC institutions in the public, private, non-profit and education sectors to deliver the Baraka Ventures vision of being a positive change agent to build and support social ventures and sustainable businesses with a triple bottom line. Zygmunt Bauman, one of the most influential thinkers of our time, says many Europeans' fear of refugees boils down to the idea of the “precariat” - people whose lives are marked by precariousness, anxiety and fear.
